The Job Search
The job search can be an overwhelming task for any college
student. Our office hopes to assist you in developing
strategies on how to navigate it effectively and
successfully.
Ultimately, there are two ways to find a job:
searching the
advertised job market or the
hidden job market. Most job hunters only
look in the advertised job market and spend the majority of
their time there. We suggest that you will benefit most by
utilizing the hidden job market method, which involves
networking. Both methods should be understood and
implemented simultaneously, and we are eager to assist you
in developing a strategic job search.
The advertised job market consists of the jobs that are
found through online
job sites, organization websites, etc. The National Association of Colleges and
Employers (NACE) found that only 15 to 20% of available jobs
are listed in the advertised job market. Kevin Brennfleck,
National Certified Career Counselor, indicates that 95% of
job hunters solely rely on the advertised job market to find
employment. That leaves over 80% of the jobs practically
untouched in the hidden job market. These jobs are hidden
because the employer does not need to advertise for them.
They are filled through networking, employee referrals, or
contacting hiring managers.
Does this mean you shouldn’t even bother using the
advertised job market? Of course not! We suggest using a
variety of strategies to increases the chances of a
successful job search.
Feel free to reference our
Job Search Guide and
Networking Guide for more information about the
advertised and hidden job markets. Furthermore, we invite
students to review our
Evaluating Job Offers Guide to assist you in that
process.
