Internships

Internships are an integral part of a Grove City College education. As a way to gain practical experience, internships provide students with hands-on skills in the field of their choice and increase their value to potential employers after graduation.  Internships also allow students to explore different career paths, for if a student enjoys a particular internship, it is likely they will also enjoy a career in that particular field.

Internships in the communication studies department are particularly unique. As a liberal art major, communication studies students can pursue internships in a wide variety of fields. Radio, broadcast or print journalism, photography, business, non-profit, and politics are only a few of the many areas communication studies majors can explore. Quite often, internships lead directly to job offers. Recently, our students have interned at:

  • Library of Congress
  • National Geographic
  • Boston Red Sox
  • MTV Networks, New York
  • Fox News
  • WXDX/Fox Sports Radio 970
  • Sean Hannity Radio
  • KDKA Television/ Radio
  • TLC Quality Living
  • U.S. Embassy, France
  • Middle East Media, Cairo, Egypt
  • World Vision
  • Compassion International
  • Pennsylvania Family Institute
  • Summer’s Best Two Weeks
  • Focus on the Family
  • Coca-Cola

Preparation for internships begins right in the classroom.  Students tailor their education to their specific field of interest and also learn foundational knowledge about the discipline in the core courses.   To provide a focus for communication studies electives, we encourage students to take electives that provide depth and dimension in areas like Organizational Communication, Media Studies, and Rhetoric and Public Advocacy.

Our nationally-ranked Career Services Office also support students in their search for the right internship.  The CSO supplies students with the knowledge and the resources they need to pursue an internship that fits their goals and interests.  The annual Career Services Office’s Internship Fair, for example, encourages students to connect with other students who have held internships and offer advice and support.

Internship Paths

Below is a sample of internships held by recent Grove City College communication studies students.

National Geographic Internship

This organization offers internships in four different areas: photography, research, web design, and editorial marketing. Photography interns learn the insides of magazine production and learn how to conduct photo research. Research interns gain experience in fact-checking and planning. Web design interns work with the photo and editorial departments to produce the website, and editorial marketing interns work with event planning.

Boston Red Sox Fellowship Program

This program provides students with experience in the day-to-day operations of the Red Sox sports franchise. Fellows are assigned to one of three different areas within the program: Business Affairs, Public Affairs, or Baseball Operations. Fellows receive an organizational mentor and exposure to meetings with senior level executives to give them the job experience they seek.

Fox News Internship

The FOX News Channel is owned by the Fox Entertainment Group, and it broadcasts primarily out of its New York City. Assigned duties for an internship with Fox News included answering emails and cropping pictures, to name a few.

WXDX/Fox Sports Radio 970 Internship

The internship is broken down into two parts: office work and field experience. The office work consists of making phone calls and setting up interviews for the radio stations; meanwhile, the field experience involves interviewing and participating in on-site radio broadcasts. Most interviews are conducted with the Pittsburgh Pirates or the Steelers during their training camp.

Sean Hannity Radio

The Sean Hannity Radio Show Internship is especially broad and includes promotions, communications, audio, and accounting. Radio interns, for example, have the responsibility of gathering and editing audio cuts, compiling daily list of audios, maintaining and archiving databases, emailing listeners, and researching stories for the show.

KDKA Radio News

Owned by CBS, KDKA Radio News covers major news in the state of Pennsylvania. Interns at KDKA stay updated on local news stories, interview people in the Pittsburgh area, and accompany reporters to press releases and conferences.

Compassion International

As a nonprofit ministry that provides a development program for children living in poverty around the world, Compassion International accepts twenty interns each summer.  Student interns work in a variety of departments including human resources, communications, marketing, and accounting.  In addition to a four day work week, interns do community volunteer work every other Friday.

Pennsylvania Family Institute

This organization seeks to strengthen families by restoring the foundational principles of the nation. Duties for an internship include sending out mailings, doing data entry, making phone calls, writing blog posts and articles, and planning, organizing, and staffing a leadership conference for high school students.

Focus on the Family

The mission of this parachurch organization is to share the Gospel while supporting the institution of the family. Interns for Focus on the Family participate in creative brainstorming meetings, script read-throughs, podcasts, and writing creative articles for the Focus on the Family Clubhouse Magazine.
