What influenced your decision to
go to graduate school?
Even while I was at GCC, I knew I wanted to continue my education, but I
wasn’t sure what I wanted to study. I am really thankful for my three
years of classroom experience. Through teaching kindergarten, I noticed
things I was seeing with my students that I wanted to learn more about.
For example, I wondered about a few of my students who always seemed to
get in trouble for their lack of self-control and who other teachers had
labeled as “bad” kids. So when I got to grad school, I began studying
emotion regulation in at-risk young children and how it affects their
academic achievement.
How did you explore graduate
school?
I primarily used websites like US News and World Report’s rankings and
Princeton Review and from there looked at lots of school’s websites. I
also emailed professors and current students to learn more about
programs.
Do you have any tips related to
the application process?
Try to stay organized. I made an Excel spreadsheet with all the
application requirements that really helped me keep the different
programs straight. Also, put a lot of time into writing your Statement
of Purpose. That is definitely not something to leave until the last
minute!
Did you obtain a Graduate
Research/Teaching Assistantship? If so, what was that application
process like?
Yes, I have a graduate assistantship with the Delaware Institute of
Excellence in Early Childhood, which is run out of the university. A
separate application was not required, so I was automatically considered
for an assistantship. Most full-time students in my program were able to
find assistantships if they wanted them. I love the work I’m doing and
feel like I am able to really connect what I’m learning in my courses to
practice.
