Graduate Program: Master of Education in Special Education; Master of
Science in Educational Administration and Supervision
Gaining teaching experience in the field contributed to my decision to
go to graduate school. Throughout my teaching experience I determined
what areas of the educational system I wanted to gain knowledge about
and strengthen my understanding of. My desire to serve all students,
positively support students and families, and be a professional resource
for colleagues influenced my decision to pursue my Master of Education
in Special Education and my Master of Science in Administration in
Supervision.
The three main sources of information I used to explore my graduate
school options were visits to the schools/discussions with school staff,
alumni perspectives, and information garnered from internet and print
resources. I considered the information gained from the three sources
when making my graduate school selection.
Listed below are tips that I would suggest to others considering or
progressing through the application process.
Prioritize what you want to gain from a program
Obtain multiple sources of information about programs and schools
Visit the school and classes
Determine if any credits from undergraduate studies or additional
graduate work will transfer to a program
Consider positive and negative aspects of schools and programs
Start exploring early and making connections with staff and
alumni
Be reflective of how you will use the information and degree in
your occupational field
Organize your process so you stay within timeframes and acquire
all necessary requirements for application
Maximize your opportunity for networking with school staff and
alumni
