What influenced your decision to go to graduate school?
Public education has never been an end game for me. I want to contribute
effectively to the profession, raise the standards, and inspire others
that music education can be a powerful shaping force in the schools and
in society. I can only do that through finding opportunities to expand
my perspective and knowledge base.
How did you explore graduate school?
After turning down the GA position in Louisiana, I wanted to stay home
and find a Master’s program that would allow me to remain in the area
and continue teaching. Duquesne’s program fit well with my desire to
maintain balance of family, work, and school. To keep my family here in
Western Pennsylvania, Kent State was the option to pursue a Ph.D. in
Music Education.
Do you have any tips related to the application process?
Examine the faculty. Examine the graduates from that school. Look at
your own professional aspirations. Does studying at that school align
you with the right pedigree in a field of research and study? It’s not
just having a degree out of convenience—it’s about finding the degree
that will serve you well over the course of your career.
Did you obtain a Graduate Research/Teaching Assistantship?
If so, what was that application process like?
It was a while ago, but I did a writing sample, GRE, and submitted some
video of my teaching and performance work as an undergraduate.
