How did you connect with this job opportunity?

I student taught at Seneca Valley which then converted to a maternity leave substitute position.  That summer a Spanish teacher resigned, and I was hired.

What attracted you to this position?

I love this age group, the district was close to my house, and it was a large school district.

What are the most gratifying aspects of your job?

Interaction with students

What was your biggest challenge as a first-year teacher?

Our district does not use a book for Spanish, so everything I used in my classes was self-created.  Planning took a lot of time.

How did your time at GCC prepare you for the teaching field?

We had to create a lot of our own materials in Srta. Forrester's class.  Every teaching opportunity, via field experiences, in class experiences, etc., helped to prepare me.

What advice would you give to a current pre-service teacher in order to better prepare for his or her future classroom?

Before you start teaching, every year, read and apply The First Days of School by Harry & Rosemary Wong.  Your biggest challenges will come from classroom management. When you get a job, contact parents frequently for positive and negative issues.  Thirdly, pray for yourself as a teacher everyday.  I pray that I would teach well, manage my classroom well, be protected, find favor with students, administration and parents.  I pray that God would give me wisdom and help me to teach in such a way that my students can see Him in me.  I also pray that I would never lose my passion for teaching.

What job search tips would you give to GCC students?

I would recommend getting a 2nd certification by taking the corresponding Praxis/test if possible.  Find another subject that you enjoyed/were good at in high school, then prepare for and take the test.
