Philosophy

The purpose of the Grove City College Early Education Center is to provide an environment in which children can achieve their full potential for social, emotional, cognitive, spiritual, and physical growth in a non-denominational Christian setting.
The learning opportunities for the children in the classroom are developmentally appropriate and play-oriented.  Each child’s unique abilities are nurtured in a caring, risk-free atmosphere using a variety of activities that encourage exploration and discovery.  Respect and responsibility for one’s self and others are encouraged in a Christian context.

The Early Childhood Education Teacher Preparation Program for Grove City College students is linked philosophically and practically to the Early Education Center classroom utilizing faculty, students, and resources.

Classroom Guidance

Positive Discipline is the framework used for classroom management.  This promotes an environment that nurtures both self-esteem and the growth of the whole child.  By encouraging mutual respect and responsibility, teacher control is minimized.  Each child constructs his/her own choices based on individual family values through daily classroom experiences.  Our emphasis is on discovering solutions together in order to create a peaceful and caring community in a Christian context.

Positive discipline focuses on self-discipline and learning from experiences.  Children who grow and learn in an atmosphere of positive discipline:

  • Learn self-control

  • Demonstrate the ability to work with others

  • Respond to limits and consequences responsibly and with flexibility

  • Learn to propose alternative behaviors

  • Understand that each individual is capable and can contribute in a meaningful way
