Our new Zone 7 Councilor is Dr. D J Wagner from Grove City College.

2005 has been declared the International Year of Physics!

Physicists all across the world will be meeting to celebrate 100 years since the publishing of five of Einstein's greatest papers, and 50 years since that genius' death.  As part of the Year of Physics, there will be a zone meeting on March 18 and 20, 2005.  The meeting will be held at the University of Michigan; if you have any questions, please click here, or contact Chairman Alex Povilus here.

Zone Meetings:

The Society of Physics Students Chapter at the University of Toledo hosted the last zone meeting on March 26 & 27, 2004.  There we listened to excellent peer presentations, heard a talk by one of U. Toledo's star faculty, and toured some of U. Toledo's laboratory facilities.  It was an awesome day.

Information about the meeting and some great photographs can be found at http://www.physics.utoledo.edu/~wwwsps/zone/.

SPS Zone meetings serve several useful purposes. They

Our goal in Zone 7 is to have at least one Zone meeting per academic year. We have done well so far. Our recent Zone meetings were:

October 26 & 27, 2003 - Forty students from eight schools met at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh. There were three student talks and six poster presentations. Dr. Bill Louis from Los Alamos National Laboratories gave the keynote address.

October 6, 2001 - Students from six universities went to a zone meeting at the University of Michigan. There were six talks by student members of SPS and three poster presentations. We also heard an excellent keynote address by Prof. Homer Neal, and Prof. Fred Adams from the University of Michigan told the students what committees look for in prospective graduate students. Dr. Gary White, Director of SPS, led a roundtable discussion on communication within the society. He unveiled the new National SPS Website.

October 14, 2000 - Students from seven universities went to the University of Toledo. This meeting was held jointly with one for the Ohio Section of the American Physical Society. There were several excellent student talks again and a round table discussion on the recruitment and retention efforts at the various schools represented.

March 11, 2000 - Students from five universities went to Eastern Michigan Unversity. There were five student talks followed by a round table discussion on how to increase communication within SPS. In the afternoon Willis Weber from Ford Research Laboratory gave a talk on industry jobs for physicists.
