Four earn conference honors
GROVE CITY, Pa. -- Four Grove City College spring sports athletes earned weekly honors from the Presidents' Athletic Conference Monday afternoon in recognition of their respective performances last week.
Grove City earned both awards in women's track and field as sophomore Eliza Lowe (Grove City, Pa./Grove City) captured Track Athlete of the Week recognition while freshman Katelyn Hess (Medina, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian) received Field Athlete of the Week honors.
Junior Peter Riley (Woodbury, Pa./Northern Bedford) captured the conference's Player of the Week honor in men's tennis and junior Christian Locher (Mars, Pa./Mars) earned the league's Player of the Week for men's golf.
Lowe swept the hurdle events Saturday at the Westminster Invitational, helping Grove City win the team title. She won the 100 hurdles in 15.46 seconds and then took the 400 hurdles in 1:04.51. Lowe also contributed to school record performances in both the 400 (50.17) and 1600 (4:06.81) relays Saturday.
Hess won the triple jump Saturday at Westminster with a best leap of 33 feet, 6 inches. She also took fourth in the high jump (5-0) and fifth in the long jump (16-1), collecting 19 total team points.
Riley went 3-0 at No. 1 singles last week, helping Grove City remain undefeated in conference play. He opened the week with a 6-0, 6-2 win April 8 over Saint Vincent's Sean Malone. Two days later, he rolled past Washington & Jefferson's Josh St. Clair, 6-0 and 6-1. Riley concluded the week with a 6-4, 6-4 decision over Mercyhurst's Travis Beck Saturday afternoon.
Riley and junior Colby Beighey (Fombell, Pa./Riverside) combined for a 2-1 record at first doubles last week. The setback came Saturday against Division II Mercyhurst, by an 8-6 score.
Locher earned medalist honors at the Bethany Invitational last Wednesday in Wheeling, W.Va. Locher fired a 73 and won the event by three strokes. He helped Grove City place third in the team standings.
The track and field teams will compete in the PAC North Quad Tuesday afternoon in Beaver Falls, Pa. The men's tennis returns to action April 22 against conference foe Bethany while the men's golf team will participate in the Saint Vincent Invitational Thursday.
