Five earn CoSIDA Academic All-District

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- Five Grove City College student-athletes earned College Division Academic All-District recognition from ESPN The Magazine and the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Thursday morning through voting by the region's sports information directors.

Senior softball player Amy Fisher (Streetsboro, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian) earned First Team All-District honors while senior teammate Rachael Risbon (Pittsburgh, Pa./Plum) is a Second Team selection.

Three Grove City baseball players earned Second Team honors Tuesday: senior DH Cody Koontz (Moundsville, W. Va./John Marshall), sophomore catcher Marcus Magister (Allison Park, Pa./Hampton) and sophomore second baseman Andrew Patterson (Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian).

Fisher started all 36 games for Grove City this spring and hit .371. She led the team with 43 total hits, 14 extra-base hits, 62 total bases and 24 runs batted in. Fisher also led the team in slugging percentage (.534) and on-base percentage (.414). She also pitched in 11 games and posted a 1-2 record.

Fisher earned First Team All-Presidents' Athletic Conference at second base from the league's head coaches following the season.

Fisher is Grove City's all-time leader with 135 games played. She is a four-year starter at the middle infield positions. In 2008, Fisher set a new single-season program record with 29 runs scored and 36 runs batted in.

Fisher owns a 3.80 cumulative grade-point average while majoring in mathematics/secondary education. She is a Dean's List student and has been named to the PAC Academic Honor Roll. She is a Presidential Scholarship recipient and has been inducted into the Kappa Mu Epsilon math honorary. 

As a First Team selection, Fisher will now advance to the national CoSIDA Academic All-America ballot. She earned Second Team All-District in 2007.

Risbon is earning her third career Academic All-District citation. She started all 36 games in right field for the Wolverines (16-20, 7-7 PAC) and hit .226. She led the team with 11 walks and recorded a .313 on-base percentage.

A four-year letterwinner and three-year starter, Risbon has compiled a 3.91 GPA as a molecular biology major. She is a Dean's List student and has been named to the PAC Academic Honor Roll. Risbon is a Presidential Scholarship recipient and has been inducted into the Omicron Delta Kappa honorary.

Koontz earned his first All-District honor after hitting .299 during the regular season as Grove City's primary designated hitter. Koontz has seven doubles this year and has knocked in 15 runs in 28 total appearances.

A four-year letterman, Koontz has played second base, third base, shortstop, outfield and has also pitched in his career. He is in his second season as a full-time starter.

Koontz has a 3.55 grade-point average as an electrical engineering major. He has earned Dean's List recognition as well as the College's Presidential Scholarship. Koontz has also received the merit-based Dale O. Smock Memorial Scholarship. He is a member of the College's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC).

Magister is in his first year as the Wolverines' starting catcher. A converted outfielder, Magister has tied Grove City's single-season home run record with 12 this year. He leads the Wolverines (17-17, 9-9 PAC) in runs scored (40), extra-base hits (20), total bases (94) and runs batted in (47) while hitting .450.

Magister leads the PAC with an .862 slugging percentage. He also owns a team-high .514 on-base percentage. Magister is second all-time at Grove City with 15 career home runs.

In the classroom, he has achieved a 3.36 GPA as a molecular biology major. Magister is a Dean's List student.

Patterson emerged as Grove City's starting second baseman early in the season and is hitting .398. He has made 24 starts and has scored 26 runs. Patterson has also struck out just four times in 102 total plate appearances.

Patterson has a 3.94 cumulative GPA while majoring in molecular biology. He is a Dean's List student and has been named to the PAC Academic Honor Roll. Patterson is the vice president of Roundtable, a sophomore men's honorary. He is also chaplain of Grove City's chapter of Fellowship of Christian Athletes. Patterson has received the College's Trustee and Presidential Scholarships.

District II includes all non-NCAA Division I colleges and universities in Pennsylvania, Maryland, New Jersey, Delaware, West Virginia and the District of Columbia. To be nominated for the CoSIDA Academic All-America program, a student-athlete must be at least a sophomore with a 3.3 or higher cumulative grade-point average and be a starter or significant reserve.
