All-PAC squads announced
WEXFORD, Pa. -- The Grove City College baseball and softball teams are both well-represented on the All-Presidents' Athletic Conference teams as voted by the league's respective head coaches. Five Grove City baseball players earned All-PAC recognition while four softball players received All-PAC honors.
In baseball, sophomore catcher Marcus Magister (Allison Park, Pa./Hampton), sophomore right fielder Scott Moran (Columbia, Md./Chapelgate Christian) and senior shortstop Ben Wilson (Mechanicsville, Va./Lee-Davis) all earned First Team distinction while sophomore second baseman Andrew Patterson (Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian) and junior pitcher Mike Herringshaw (Chardon, Ohio/Notre Dame Cathedral Latin) both landed on the Second Team.
In softball, senior second baseman Amy Fisher (Streetsboro, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian) and sophomore third baseman Christine Slater (Aliquippa, Pa./Center) both earned First Team status. Junior center fielder Heidi Lohr (Lititz, Pa./Lancaster Catholic) and sophomore pitcher Lauren Pennell (Zelienople, Pa./Seneca Valley) are Second Team honorees.
Magister set a new program record by hitting 13 home runs this season. He led Grove City in hitting (.443), total bases (104), slugging percentage (.852), on-base percentage (.506) and tied for the team lead with 43 runs scored. Magister led the PAC in home runs, slugging percentage and sacrifice flies (8) this year. A converted outfielder, Magister finished the season with 54 total hits.
Moran hit .360 and scored 43 runs for Grove City (18-19 overall). He finished second on the team in slugging (.512) while accumulating 64 total bases. Moran walked a team-high 22 times and recorded a .462 on-base percentage. He also went 13 for 13 in stealing bases. He started all 37 games in right field this year.
Wilson capped his fourth year as a starting infielder at Grove City by hitting .306 with five home runs. He started 36 games at shortstop and scored 41 runs in 2009. Wilson also drove in 32 runs and slugged .484. He is a three-year starter at shortstop after playing second baseman as a freshman in 2006.
Patterson emerged as Grove City's starting second baseman early in the conference schedule and hit .378 for the season. He scored 27 runs and slugged .469. Patterson also struck out just five times in 113 plate appearances this season.
Herringshaw led Grove City with six pitching wins this year. He hurled 66 innings in his 16 total appearance, including three complete games. Herringshaw finished the year 6-6 with one save and a 4.64 earned run average.
Fisher hit .371 for the Grove City softball team and led the team with 62 total bases and 24 runs batted in. She belted a team-best 10 doubles and 14 total extra-base hits. Fisher tied for the team lead with 43 hits and she also compiled a team-best .414 on-base percentage. Fisher played in all 36 games.
Slater led the Wolverines (16-20 overall, 7-7 PAC) with a .391 batting average this season. She collected 43 hits in her 35 starts this year. Slater also scored 25 runs, second-best on the team. Her .407 on-base percentage also ranked second on the team.
Lohr made an immediate impact in her first season at Grove City by leading the PAC with seven triples. She hit .272 this year and led the Wolverines with 11 walks and 15 stolen bases out of her leadoff spot in the order. Lohr also scored 23 runs in 36 games.
Pennell set new Grove City program records for appearances (35), starts (33), complete games (24) and innings pitched (201 2/3) this year. She went 15-18 with 106 strikeouts and a 3.68 ERA. The 15 wins are the second-most in one season at Grove City.
At the plate, Pennell hit .313 with five doubles in 2009.
Washington & Jefferson outfielder/pitcher Jim Pasquine earned PAC Most Valuable Player honors for baseball while Thomas More's Dana Bors is the softball Player of the Year.
