Grove City sending 22 to ECAC Championships
GROVE CITY, Pa. -- Twenty-two Grove City College track and field athletes have qualified for this week's Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III Championships, which will be hosted by Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, N.Y. The Championships will begin Thursday afternoon and will wrap up Friday evening.
Thirteen members of the women's track and field squad and nine men's performers have qualified. On the women's side, three Grove City athletes will compete in the 3000 steeplechase: senior Sarah Cessar (Slippery Rock, Pa./Slippery Rock), sophomore Emily Rabenold (Allison Park, Pa./Hampton) and senior Laurel Skorup (Sandwich, Ill./Sandwich).
Sophomore Eliza Lowe (Grove City, Pa./Grove City) qualified in the 100 hurdles and 400 hurdles. Lowe will join sophomore Allison Blain (Danbury, Conn./Danbury), freshman Kate Hussey (Port Murray, N.J./Warren Hills) and freshman Sarah Williamson (Mount Wolf, Pa./Northeastern) in the 400-meter relay. Blain, Lowe, sophomore Bethany Easom (Keller, Texas/Saline) and freshman Lauren Pearce (Hudsonville, Mich./Hudsonville) comprise Grove City's 1600-meter relay quartet.
Senior Cayla Clawson (York, Pa./Central York), junior Caroline Kimpel (Columbiana, Ohio/Columbiana), sophomore Janice Novacek (Hopewell, Pa./Hopewell) and senior Austin Powell (Shamong, N.J./Seneca) have qualified in the 3200 relay.
The men's squad will be represented in each of the three relay events. Freshman Nick Betz (Colorado Springs, Colo./Discovery Canyon), senior John Green (Ligonier, Pa./Ligonier Valley), freshman Tyler Ramsey (Scottdale, Pa./Southmoreland) and junior Thomas Whittaker (Grove City, Pa./Grove City) will represent Grove City in the 400-meter relay.
Betz, Green, freshman Ryan Buchalter (Colorado Springs, Colo./Colorado Springs Christian) and junior Ethan Witmer (North Lima, Ohio/South Range) comprise Grove City's 1600 relay while Buchalter, senior Matt Logie (West Chester, Pa./Delaware County Christian), senior Arleigh McRae (East Brookfield, Mass./Whitinsville Christian) and senior Matt Mucha (Parma, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian) will compete in the 3200 relay.
Rabenold won the Presidents' Athletic Conference title in the steeplechase and owns the school record in that event with a time of 11 minutes, 3.50 seconds. Cessar and Skorup each previously held the College record in the steeplechase before being supplanted by Rabenold. Cessar is second all-time and Skorup ranks third.
Lowe won the conference title in both hurdle events. She set school records in both the 100 (14.67) and 400 (1:04.19) hurdles at the league meet. Grove City's 400 relay (50.17 seconds) and 1600 relay (4:04.79) also hold school records.
Clawson and Kimpel helped Grove City set the school record in the 3200 relay (9:51.94) last year. This year, Grove City has a season-best time of 10:00.20.
Betz owns the school record in the 110 hurdles (14.79) and ranks second all-time in the 400 hurdles with a time of 54.91 seconds. Green is the school record-holder in the 400 meters (48.51). Logie, McRae and Mucha helped set a new record in the 3200 relay last year with a time of 8:05.14.
