Grove City competes in ECAC Championships

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. -- The Grove City College women's and men's track and field teams concluded the 2013 season Thursday and Friday by competing in the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Championships at Springfield College. Nineteen Grove City performers competed in the two-day event.

On the women's side, senior Ella Smith (Becker, Minn./Becker) led Grove City by placing second in the 10,000 meters with a time of 37 minutes, 22.33 seconds. Junior John Green (Ligonier, Pa./Ligonier Valley) led the men's squad by capturing fifth place in the 400 meters with a school-record time of 48.51 seconds.

Green also took 21st in the 400 hurdles (56.52) and anchored Grove City's 400-meter relay team, which placed 28th. Sophomore Thomas Whittaker (Grove City, Pa./Grove City), junior Andrew Ledbetter (Fairfax, Va./Oakton) and senior Patrik Miller (Berlin, Ohio/Hiland) joined Green in producing a time of 43.80 seconds.

Grove City closed the meet by taking 19th in the 3200-meter relay. Junior Arleigh McRae (East Brookfield, Mass./Whitinsville Christian), senior Cooper Thurston (Washington, Mo./Washington), junior Matt Mucha (Parma, Ohio/Cuyahoga Falls) and junior Alec Schultz (Wayzata, Minn./Orono) posted a time of 8:09.78 in the 3200 relay.

Grove City took 12th in the women's 3200 relay as junior Sarah Cessar (Slippery Rock, Pa./Slippery Rock), junior Cayla Clawson (York, Pa./Central York), sophomore Caroline Kimpel (Columbiana, Ohio/Columbiana) and freshman Emily Rabenold (Allison Park, Pa./Hampton) posted a time of 9:44.85.

Senior Mary Kate Breese (Mercer, Pa./Mercer) earned 11th in the 10,000 (38:33.24) while classmate Anna Dunsworth (Erie, Pa./Strong Vincent) took 22nd in that event with a time of 40:41.85. Rabenold placed 23rd in the 10,000 in 40:58.34.

Freshman Eliza Lowe (Grove City, Pa./Grove City) competed in both hurdle events for Grove City. She took 21st in the 400 hurdles (1:06.84) and 24th in the 100 hurdles (15.36). Sophomore Mara Womer (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan) earned 28th in the 400 hurdles with a time of 1:08.79.

Junior Laurel Skorup (Sandwich, Ill./Sandwich) finished 29th in the 3000 steeplechase with a time of 12:21.26.

Bates won the men's team competition with 76 points. Rowan won the women's title with 63 points.
