Three earn Academic All-District

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- Three Grove City College student-athletes earned ESPN The Magazine/College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) College Division Men's At-Large Academic All-District II honors Thursday through voting by the region's sports information directors.

Senior tennis player Jeremy Dwyer (Duncansville, Pa./Hollidaysburg) and junior swimmer Rich Albertson (Berwick, Pa./Berwick) both earned First Team All-District. Senior swimmer Tim Whitbeck (Saegertown, Pa./Saegertown) is a Second Team selection.

As First Team selections, Albertson and Dwyer both advance to the national CoSIDA Academic All-America ballot. The Academic All-America team will be announced in June.

Dwyer is earning his third straight First Team All-District selection. This year, he won Presidents' Athletic Conference titles at fourth singles and third doubles. He finished his career with 52 singles wins and 39 doubles victories. His career record is 91-20 overall.

Dwyer earned Team MVP honors in 2007 is an eight-time PAC champion. He helped the Wolverines win the conference title in each of his four seasons.

An eight-time Dean's List selection, Dwyer compiled a 3.84 cumulative grade-point average and graduated last Saturday with a degree in electrical engineering. He has been named to the PAC Academic Honor Roll and has earned the College's Presidential Scholarship. Dwyer is a member of the Omicron Delta Kappa leadership honorary and the Kappa Mu Epsilon math honorary.

He earned Third Team Academic All-America honors as a junior in 2008.

Albertson received First Team All-District status after achieving Second Team distinction as a sophomore. A three-year letterman in the butterfly and backstroke, he has helped the Wolverines capture back-to-back conference titles during his career. He placed fifth in the 200 backstroke at the 2009 PAC Championships and also recorded top-10 finishes in the 100 backstroke and 400 individual medley.

Albertson owns a 3.93 GPA while majoring in molecular biology. He is a Dean's List student and has been named to the PAC Academic Honor Roll. Albertson has earned the College's Presidential Scholarship as well as the Robert and Gertrude Cross Scholarship. He is also involved in the Men of God campus organization.

Whitbeck is a Second Team selection for the second straight year. He earned 14 NCAA Division III All-America honors during his career. This season, he earned All-America in the 50 and 100 freestyle races at the NCAA Championships. Whitbeck also contributed to All-America efforts in the 200 and 400 free relays and the 200 and 400 medley relays. His effort helped Grove City place sixth in the team standings at the NCAA meet.

In 2007, Whitbeck won the NCAA Division III title in the 50 free. Last season, he earned PAC Most Valuable Performer honors. Whitbeck is the second-most decorated athlete in Grove City history.

Whitbeck achieved a 3.38 cumulative GPA and graduated with a degree in computer science. He is a Dean's List student and has been named to the conference's Academic Honor Roll.

Seventeen Grove City student-athletes have earned Academic All-District honors in the 2008-09 academic year. The school record is 22, set two years ago.

District II includes all non-NCAA Division I colleges and universities in Pennsylvania, Maryland, New Jersey, Delaware, West Virginia and the District of Columbia. To be nominated for the CoSIDA Academic All-America program, a student-athlete must be at least a sophomore with a 3.2 or higher cumulative grade-point average and be a starter or significant reserve.
