Grove City competes at ECAC Championships

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. -- Ten Grove City College track and field athletes competed Thursday and Friday at the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Springfield College.

On the women's side, senior distance ace Erin Claxton (Redondo Beach, Calif./Redondo Union) placed second in the 5000-meter run Friday with a season-best time of 17 minutes, 39.07 seconds. That time provisionally qualifies Claxton for next weekend's NCAA Division III Championships. Misericordia's Amy Bower won the race in a time of 17:26.62.

Nine Grove City men's track and field athletes competed in the two-day event. Sophomore Sam Dippold (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills) helped lead the Grove City effort by taking seventh in the 400 hurdles. Dippold posted a time of 56.77 seconds, best in his heat.

Freshman high jumper Jeremy Hurt (Verona, Pa./Riverview) took ninth in the high jump, clearing 1.94 meters (6-4). Freshman Dave Hodge (Enon Valley, Pa./Mohawk) placed 12th in the triple jump with a jump of 13.11 meters (43-0).

Both of Grove City's relay teams placed 14th overall. The 400-meter quartet of senior Philip Hart (Wyomissing, Pa./Wyomissing), sophomore Dave Majewski (Lockport, N.Y./Starpoint Central), sophomore Jesse Sunquist (Allison Park, Pa./Hampton) and freshman Matt Kulinski (Oil City, Pa./Oil City) posted a time of 44.32 seconds. Dippold, Kulinski, sophomore Yu Kuwabara (Owings Mills, Md./University, W. Va.) and Sunquist took 14th in the 1600-meter relay with a mark of 3:27.80.

Kulinski tied for 12th in the pole vault after he failed to clear the opening height while Hart placed 12th in the 100-meter dash preliminaries. Hart posted a time of 11.20 seconds. Freshman hurdler Bob Rummel (Cabot, Pa./Knoch) competed in the 110 high hurdles preliminaries, taking 12th with a time of 15.50 seconds.
