Three Wolverines earn PAC weekly honors

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- Three Grove City College student-athletes have been selected as the Presidents' Athletic Conference Athletes of the Week in their respective sports for their efforts in competition during the week of September 21-27, as announced by the conference office Monday afternoon.

Senior goalkeeper Nicole Lapia (Pittsburgh, Pa./Chartiers Valley) was selected as the conference's Women's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week while freshmen Maggie Manchester (Williamsport, Pa./Williamsport) and Cole McCook (Chester Springs, Pa./Downingtown STEM) were honored as Women's Tennis Player of the Week and Men's Golfer of the Week, respectively.

Lapia earned her first career honor after producing a pair of shutouts in goal to lead the Wolverines to a 2-0 record. She made a career-high nine saves in Grove City's 3-0 victory at regional rival Penn State Behrend on Tuesday and followed that effort with a two-save shutout in 93-plus minutes in the Wolverines' 1-0 overtime victory over Mount Union on Saturday.

On the year, Lapia owns a 0.87 goals against average and an .840 save percentage while helping Grove City to a 5-3-1 start. The Wolverines play their final non-conference game Wednesday at Baldwin Wallace at 7 p.m.

Manchester also earned her first career honor after going 4-0 over two matches to help Grove City to a 2-0 week. On Tuesday, she won 6-4, 6-3 at first singles against Franciscan and also picked up an 8-6 first doubles victory with teammate Karolina Lagerquist. She followed that showing with on Thursday with a 6-0, 6-0 win at first singles and an 8-1 triumph at first doubles against conference foe Geneva.

For the season, Manchester owns a 7-2 overall record in singles play and is the lone undefeated player at first singles in conference matches with a 3-0 record. Grove City is scheduled to host Waynesburg tomorrow at 3:30 p.m.

McCook continued what has already been a strong freshman campaign by helping Grove City to team titles in consecutive days. On Monday, he earned medalist honors for the first time in his collegiate career to lead the Wolverines to victory at Penn State Behrend. He then shot a 78 to finish in the top 10 and help Grove City earn the team win on Tuesday at the La Roche Fall Invitational.

The Grove City men's and women's golf teams will play the fall portion of the 2015-16 Presidents' Athletic Conference Championships this Friday and Saturday at Cedarbrook Golf Course in Belle Vernon, Pa.
