Carter, Preston earn ECAC honors
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. -- Two Grove City College athletes earned weekly honors from the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Tuesday night for their respective performances last week. Junior cross country runner Kristen Carter (Bellingham, Wash./Bellingham) is this week's ECAC Division III Women's Cross Country Runner of the Week while junior goalkeeper Bethany Preston (Elma, N.Y./Iroquois) is the Division III South Defensive Player of the Week.
Carter earned ECAC Runner of the Week recognition after winning the individual title at Lehigh University's Paul Short Invitational Friday, September 28. Carter completed the six-kilometer course in 21 minutes, 47 seconds, defeating 239 other runners. Her effort helped Grove City earn second place at the 39-team event. Carter is also the Presidents' Athletic Conference Runner of the Week. She is the defending PAC Most Valuable Performer. In 2006, Carter earned All-Mideast Region honors and qualified for the NCAA Division III Championships.
Grove City is now ranked fourth in the Mideast Region, according to the United States Track and Field/Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).
Preston posted two shutouts in goal last week, helping Grove City remain unbeaten. She had 11 saves in a 1-0 victory over Baldwin-Wallace Sept. 26, then stopped one shot in a 3-0 victory over PAC foe Bethany Saturday. Preston, this week's PAC Defensive Player of the Week, is 5-0-1 this year with an 0.30 goals-against average.
Grove City is now 9-0-1, the best start in program history. The Wolverines host Waynesburg Wednesday at 4 p.m.
