Carter honored by ECAC; Cichowitz, Rylands earn PAC honors
GROVE CITY, Pa. -- Grove City College junior cross country standout Kristen Carter (Bellingham, Wash./Bellingham) is this week's Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III women's cross country Runner of the Week. Carter is also the Presidents' Athletic Conference women's cross country Runner of the Week.
Two other Grove City athletes earned PAC weekly honors this week. Freshman runner Garrett Cichowitz (Colorado Springs, Colo./Palmer) is the men's cross country Runner of the Week while junior defensive end Ryan Rylands (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) is the football Special Teams Player of the Week.
Carter recorded her third straight individual title last Saturday by winning the Gettysburg Invitational. Carter won the six-kilometer race with a time of 22 minutes, 12.23 seconds. She won by 39.22 seconds over Dickinson's Layla Naficy. Carter also won the Lehigh University Paul Short Invitational and the Slippery Rock Open this season.
As a team, Grove City finished third out of 14 squads at Gettysburg.
It is Carter's second ECAC award in the last three weeks. Carter has earned PAC Runner of the Week honors in each of the last three weeks. Overall, Carter earned PAC Runner of the Week five times this season.
Cichowitz is PAC men's cross country Runner of the Week for the second time in a three-week span. He placed fourth out of 171 runners at Gettysburg Saturday with a time of 26:42.23 for eight kilometers. Cichowitz finished second among NCAA Division III runners at the meet. Grove City took fourth at the 15-team meet Saturday.
Grove City's cross country teams will return to action October 27 for the PAC Championships, hosted by Saint Vincent College in Latrobe, Pa.
Rylands earned his first PAC Player of the Week award after helping the Wolverines earn a 14-13 victory at Thiel Saturday afternoon in the 24th annual Mercer County Cup game. Rylands deflected a potential game-tying extra point with 3:05 left in the game, preserving the Grove City lead. He also had three tackles.
Grove City will host No. 9 Washington & Jefferson Saturday afternoon at 1:30 p.m.
