Wolverine athletes earn weekly honors
GROVE CITY, Pa. -- Two Grove City College athletes earned weekly honors from the Presidents' Athletic Conference Monday night and a third Wolverine performer earned "Team of the Week" recognition from D3Football.com in recognition of his play Saturday afternoon.
Sophomore swimmer Jenny Ryan (State College, Pa./State College) is this week's PAC Women's Swimmer of the Week while in football, junior punter Ed Reith (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills) is the conference's Special Teams Player of the Week.
Junior middle linebacker Jason Ferguson (Mineral Ridge, Ohio/Mineral Ridge) earned D3Football.com "Team of the Week" distinction.
Ryan posted three individual victories Saturday in Grove City's 156-111 victory over Saint Vincent in the Wolverines' conference opener at James E. Longnecker Pool. Ryan won the 50 free in 25.34 seconds while also taking first in the 1650 (18:06.35). She capped her day by winning the 200 breaststroke in 2:35.62.
Reith averaged 40.8 yards per punt on four kicks Saturday in Grove City's 21-7 home win over Bethany at Robert E. Thorn Field. He boomed a season-long 64-yard punt from the Grove City end zone in the fourth quarter to help change field position.
A three-year letterman at wingback, Reith also returned two kickoffs for 36 yards, carried the ball twice for 11 yards and caught one pass for eight yards.
Ferguson intercepted two passes in the fourth quarter of Saturday's win over Bethany. He returned his first interception 28 yards to the Bethany 31, setting up the Wolverines' final touchdown of the game. Ferguson then intercepted a pass at the Grove City 10 in the final minute to seal the victory.
Ferguson also made eight tackles, helping lead a defensive effort that forced four Bethany turnovers and recorded three sacks.
Grove City's swimming and diving teams visit Carnegie Mellon Saturday at 1 p.m. The football team closes the regular season Saturday at 1 p.m. against visiting Thiel in the 27th annual battle for the prestigious Mercer County Cup at Robert E. Thorn Field.
