Grove City qualifies for NCAA Championships

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College women's cross country team has been invited to compete in next Saturday's 2010 NCAA Division III Championships, hosted by Wartburg College in Waverly, Iowa. The Wolverines will be making the program's first trip to the national championships as a team.

The Wolverines captured fifth place at the NCAA Mideast Regional Championships Saturday at Cooper's Lake Campground in Slippery Rock. The top two squads at that meet, Johns Hopkins and Dickinson, earned automatic berths in the NCAA Championships. Sunday evening, Grove City received one of 16 at-large to the 32-team NCAA Championships.

Two Grove City runners earned All-Mideast recognition Saturday after finishing in the top 35. Sophomore Ella Smith (Becker, Minn./Becker) took 13th and classmate Sara Fisher (Jefferson, Md./Brunswick) finished 20th overall.

Seven Wolverine runners competed in the Mideast meet Saturday, helping the team accumulate a mere 170 team points.

Senior Emily Pierce (Lisbon, N.Y./Lisbon Central) finished 38th, six spots ahead of senior Brigitte Fryan (Canton, Ohio/Massillon Jackson). Senior Kate McRoberts (Green, OhioCuyahoga Valley Christian) earned 55th place. Junior Mary Rachel Robbins (Lockport, N.Y./Lockport) placed 58th and sophomore Hillary Wilson (Solon, Ohio/Solon) finished 125th.

Grove City's three alternates for the NCAA Championships will be sophomore Mary Kate Breese (Mercer, Pa./Mercer), sophomore Anna Dunsworth (Erie, Pa./Strong Vincent) and freshman Grace Postma (New Berlin, Wis./New Berlin West). That is the same 10-runner lineup that head coach Sean Severson entered in the Mideast Championships.

The women's team will be joined by men's standout Garrett Cichowitz (Colorado Springs, Colo./Palmer), who qualified for the NCAA Championships by finishing 17th overall. He earned All-Mideast honors for the fourth straight season and will be making his third consecutive trip to the NCAA Championships.

Grove City's men's cross country team placed 18th at the Mideast Championships Saturday.
