Wolverines 29th at NCAA Championships; Cichowitz 82nd

WAVERLY, Iowa -- Eight Grove City College cross country runners competed in the NCAA Division III Championships Saturday at Wartburg College. The Grove City College women's cross country team finished 29th out of 32 teams in the program's first trip to the national championships.

On the men's side, senior Garrett Cichowitz (Colorado Springs, Colo./Palmer) competed as an individual and took 82nd overall. Cichowitz completed the eight-kilometer course in 25 minutes, 21.2 seconds.

The women's team finished the meet with 607 team points. Sophomore Sara Fisher (Jefferson, Md./Brunswick) led Grove City by finishing 49th overall. She covered the six-kilometer course in 22 minutes, 14.1 seconds. Fisher finished two spots ahead of sophomore Ella Smith (Becker, Minn./Becker), who earned 51st with a time of 22:14.8.

Senior Emily Pierce (Lisbon, N.Y./Lisbon) finished 139th in 23:04.0 while classmate Brigitte Fryan (Canton, Ohio/Massillon Jackson) placed 180th with a time of 23:28.0. Senior Kate McRoberts (Green, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian) placed 188th in 23:37.2, rounding out Grove City's top five.

Junior Mary Rachel Robbins (Lockport, N.Y./Lockport Central) finished 201st (23:49.2) and sophomore Hillary Wilson (Solon, Ohio/Solon) came in 219th with a time of 24:25.5.

St. Lawrence senior Wendy Pavlus won the women's individual title with a time of 20:49.3. Middlebury won the team title with 185 points while Washington (Mo.) took second with 193 points. A total of 279 runners competed in the women's race.

Haverford senior Anders Hulleberg won the men's individual race with a victorious time of 24:22.2. Haverford won the men's team title with 87 team points.

Cichowitz finished 70th at the 2009 NCAA Championships. He also qualified for the national meet as a sophomore and took 133rd. He concludes his cross country career as a four-time NCAA All-Mideast Region performer.
