Wolverines drop first-round game to Bethany

BETHANY, WV, April 19, 2000--Bethany ace Justin Deem tossed a five-hitter over nine complete innings as the third-seeded Bison defeated second-seeded Grove City, 13-3, in the first round of the Presidents' Athletic Conference Championship Baseball Tournament Wednesday in Bethany.

Bethany led 3-0 after two innings, then added three in the fifth and seven over the final three frames.  The Wolverines posted all three of their runs in the ninth, two coming on DH Adam Myers' (Conneaut Lake, PA/Conneaut Lake) first home run of the season.

Justin Magee (Grove City, PA/Grove City) started for Grove City and surrendered seven hits and six runs (5 ER) over five innings, striking out two and walking two.  Ben Helms (Mead, WA/St. George School) threw the final four innings and allowed seven runs (6 ER) on eight hits with three walks and one strikeout.

Bison C Steve Opfermann went 3-for-5 with two homers and a double.   CF Matt King and 3B Marc Paoletta also had three hits each.

The Wolverines will stay at Bethany to play fourth-seeded Washington & Jefferson Wednesday.  The Presidents fell to fifth-seeded Thiel, 17-10, in Waynesburg.
