Wolverines make it five straight

Game Box

WAYNESBURG, PA, March 30, 2001--The Grove City College baseball team extended its winning streak to five and improved to 3-0 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference with a 6-3 victory at Waynesburg College Friday afternoon.

Junior RHP Justin Magee (Grove City, PA/Grove City) surrendered just two runs on four hits through seven innings, while striking out three and walking three.  Senior LHP Mike Suchan (Independence, OH/Independence) and freshman RHP Matt Kearney (New Castle, PA/Neshannock) each tossed an inning of relief with Kearney striking out two of the three batters he faced in the ninth to pick up his first save.

Senior RF Nate Kauffman (Canonsburg, PA/Canon-McMillan) belted his fourth home run of the season -- a two-run shot in the fourth --  that put the Wolverines ahead, 2-1.  Waynesburg tied the game, 2-2, in the bottom half of the frame, but sophomore 1B Steve Navarro (Gilbertsville, PA/The Hill School) singled home senior 3B J.G. Louden (Morgantown, WV/University) with the game-winning run in the top of the sixth and came around to score the Wolverines' fourth run when junior OF Eric Bell (Grove City, PA/Grove City) reached third on a mishandled ball by the center fielder.

Louden collected two hits in the victory, including a two-run homer in the eighth that extended the Wolverine lead to 6-2.  Navarro also had two hits.

The two teams are scheduled to play a doubleheader Saturday at Grove City's College Field beginning at 1:00 p.m.
