Wolverines settle for split at Case

CLEVELAND, OH, April 10, 2001--After a week of rainouts, the Grove City College baseball team (8-5) earned a doubleheader split at Case Western Reserve University on Tuesday, losing the first game 8-7, before taking the nightcap, 8-2. 

The Wolverines let leads of 3-0 and 6-3 slip away in Game One.  Senior SS Mike Kashurba (Latrobe, PA/Greater Latrobe) opened the scoring with a three-run homer in the top of the first, but the Spartans evened the score with three runs in the third.  Grove City added a three spot in the fourth, before Case plated five in the bottom half of the inning to take the lead for good.  Senior CF Adam Booth (Hartville, OH/Lake), senior DH Adam Myers (Conneaut Lake, PA/Conneaut Lake) and junior LF Eric Bell (Grove City, PA/Grove City) collected two hits each.  Senior LHP Mike Suchan (Independence, OH/Independence) took the loss (1-2), allowing seven runs (six earned) on nine hits in 3-1/3 innings.  

Senior RF Nate Kauffman (Canonsburg, PA/Canon-McMillan) went 2-for-2 in the second game and Booth drove in three runs to help the Wolverines post their second split of the season.  Senior RHP Brian Kaufold (Butler, PA/Knoch) notched the victory (2-1), yielding two runs (one earned) on four hits.  Freshman RHP Jake Cuthbert (Belle Vernon, PA/Belle Vernon), senior RHP J.G. Louden (Morgantown, WV/University) and freshman RHP Matt Kearney (New Castle, PA/Neshannock) each added a scoreless inning of relief.

Kashurba's home run marked his first of the season and the team's 12th of the spring.  Myers, Louden and sophomore 2B Ben Helms (Mead, WA/St. Georges' School) each added a double.
