GROVE CITY, PA, April 23, 2001--Senior RF Nate Kauffman (Canonsburg, PA/Canon-McMillan) broke his own school record for home runs in a season with his eighth "jack" of the year as the Grove City College baseball team (12-8, 9-2 PAC) won a pair over visiting Washington & Jefferson College by finals of 5-4 and 9-6 Monday.
Kauffman, who cracked seven homers in 31 games last year, sparked the victory in Game Two with a mammoth two-run shot in the seventh which broke a 4-4 tie. Kauffman, who went 2-for-4 in the nine-inning game, was one of six Wolverines who collected multiple safeties in a 15-hit outburst, which included six for extra bases. Sophomore 2B Ben Helms (Mead, WA/St. Georges' School) went 4-for-5 with a double, sophomore C Matt Skipper (Canton, OH/Canton South) went 3-for-4 with two doubles, while senior SS Mike Kashurba (Latrobe, PA/Greater Latrobe), senior 3B J.G. Louden (Morgantown, WV/University) and sophomore 1B Steve Navarro (Gilbertsville, PA/The Hill School) contributed two hits apiece. Kashurba and Navarro each had a double.
Grove City won the first game in its last at-bat (bottom of the seventh), breaking a 4-4 tie when senior LF Adam Myers (Conneaut Lake, PA/Conneaut Lake) sprinted home from third on a wild pitch. Myers, who reached base in the seventh on a walk, scored two runs in the game, singling in the fifth -- one of just three Wolverine hits in the game. Senior CF Adam Booth (Hartville, OH/Lake) also singled and scored two runs. Navarro doubled to account for the third hit.
Both pitching victories were recorded by
freshman relievers with Chris Hull (Chagrin Falls, OH/Chagrin Falls) picking up his
second win (2-0) in three days in Game One and Jake Cuthbert (Belle Vernon,
PA/Belle Vernon) getting the victory (1-1) in the nightcap.
