Wolverines edge Hiram, 5-4
GROVE CITY, PA, May 7, 2001--Senior RF Nate Kauffman (Canonsburg, PA/Canon-McMillan) went 2-for-4 with a double and three RBI as Grove City (19-10) stopped a two-game losing skid with a 5-4 win over visiting Hiram (20-18) Monday afternoon.
Kauffman doubled home a run in the first inning and plated two with a bases-loaded single in the fourth. The Wolverines scored four times in the fourth to take a 5-3 lead and never trailed again, surrendering just a run in the ninth.
Senior LF Adam Myers (Conneaut Lake, PA/Conneaut Lake) collected two hits in three at-bats and scored a run. Senior SS Mike Kashurba (Latrobe, PA/Greater Latrobe) had a single and scored twice, while senior 3B J.G. Louden (Morgantown, WV/University) added a hit and a run scored. Sophomore 2B Ben Helms (Mead, WA/St. Georges' School) contributed an RBI single and junior DH Drew Hoagland (Butler, PA/Knoch) knocked in a run with a sacrifice fly.
Freshman RHP Jake Cuthbert (Belle Vernon, PA/Belle Vernon) earned the victory (2-1), allowing four runs (three earned) on 13 hits in nine complete innings. Cuthbert struck out three and walked three.
The Wolverines, now 6-4 in one-run games this
spring, will seek their second 20-win
season in three years Tuesday when they host Oberlin in the regular-season
finale.
