Wolverines open season in Virginia

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA, March 15, 2002--Freshman DH Joel Diller (Hartville, OH/Marlington) went 5-for-7 in the Grove City College baseball team's season-opening doubleheader on Friday, but the Wolverines (0-2) dropped both games to host Hampden-Sydney College (6-9) in Virginia by finals of 8-7 and 7-2.

In the first game, Wolverine senior CF Eric Bell (Grove City, PA/Grove City) cracked a two-run double in the top of the seventh to tie the game, 7-7, but Hampden-Sydney rallied with a run in the bottom of the inning, scoring the game-winner on a two-out single to left.

Bell collected two hits in the game and drove in three runs.  Diller went 3-for-4, while sophomore 2B Jake Cuthbert (Belle Vernon, PA/Belle Vernon) and sophomore RF Chris Hull (Chagrin Falls, OH/Chagrin Falls) had two hits apiece.  The Wolverines banged out 11 total hits in the opener.

Sophomore LF Greg Grupp (Harmony, PA/Slippery Rock) highlighted the second game with his first career home run, but Hampden-Sydney used a five-run fifth to earn the sweep.  Grupp and Diller each went 2-for-3 at the plate.

Grove City will play a pair of games at Lynchburg College (VA) on Saturday.
