Mycyk's two homers power GCC over Bethany
by Greg Knowlden, sports information student assistant

BETHANY, WV, April 5, 2002-- Freshmen DH Joel Diller (Hartville, OH/Marlington) and 3B John Mycyk (Pittsburgh, PA/Shadyside Academy) headlined the hitting attack to provide offense for sophomore right-hander Matt Kearney (New Castle, PA/Neshannock) as the Grove City College baseball team (1-7, 1-3 PAC) hammered host Bethany for a 12-3 victory in Presidents’ Athletic Conference action.

Diller got the offense going early with a two run home run in the first.  Mycyk homered in both the second and the fourth as the Wolverines built an insurmountable 9-1 lead through the fifth frame.  Diller’s blast and Mycyk’s shot in the second were both on full counts and enter Grove City’s annals as the duo’s initial collegiate home runs.  Junior 1B Steve Navarro (Gilbertsville, PA/The Hill School) hit his second homer of the season with a three-run bomb in the ninth inning.  The unexpected power surge triples the Wolverines’ season total from two to six.

Kearney scattered eight hits over seven innings and struck out five Bison hitters to get the win.  He stranded seven baserunners in the first three innings and then hit a stretch in which he retired nine of the next ten batters he faced.  Freshman Luke Lester (Dover, OH/Dover) struck out three over the final two innings.

Sophomore 2B Jake Cuthbert (Belle Vernon, PA/Belle Vernon) went 2-4 and scored three times to complement Diller (3-4, two RBI, four runs) and Mycyk (3-5, four RBI, two runs).  Grove City’s other runs were plated by sophomore LF Greg Grupp (Harmony, PA/Slippery Rock) with a RBI single and junior C Matt Skipper (Canton, OH/Canton South) whose bases loaded single scored two more.  Grove City left only five runners on base on the afternoon.

Grove City looks to even its PAC record on Saturday when it hosts Bethany for a doubleheader starting at 1 PM.  Probable starters are senior Justin Magee (Grove City, PA/Grove City) and freshman Mike Gundy (Grand Rapids, MI/Grand Rapids Christian).
