GREENVILLE,
PA, April 17, 2002 -- Thiel College outlasted the visiting Grove City College
baseball team (5-11, 5-4 PAC) Wednesday afternoon as the Wolverines lost a hard
fought 12-10 decision in Presidents’ Athletic Conference play.
Grove City answered Thiel’s three run seventh with three in its half of
the eighth but couldn't push the tying run across.
Wolverine sophomore starter Chris Hull (Chagrin Falls, OH/Chagrin Falls)
surrendered only one run in the first two innings but struggled after a rain
delay of more than one hour. He was
plagued by six walks in his three plus innings pitched.
Sophomore reliever Sean O’Donnell (Brackenridge, PA/St. Joseph) gave up
three runs, all unearned, and struck out three after coming on with nobody out
in the sixth.
Grove City was led at the plate by junior C Matt Skipper (Canton, OH/Canton
South), who went 3-for-5 with three RBI. Sophomore
LF Greg Grupp (Harmony, PA/Slippery Rock) also collected three hits for the
Wolverines. Senior RF Mike Volchko
(Akron, OH/Archbishop Hoban) reached base four times with a single, two walks,
and a hit by pitch, and scored twice. Freshman
Michael McMillen (Pittsburgh, PA/North Allegheny) belted a pinch hit single in
the eighth to plate two runners and pull Grove City within two runs.
Grove City will look to continue its recent strong play in the PAC (5-1 in their
last six league clashes) when it hosts Washington & Jefferson College Friday
afternoon at 3 PM. The Wolverines
will travel to Washington to play the Presidents in a doubleheader on Saturday.
