GROVE
CITY, PA, April 19, 2002 -- The Grove City College baseball team (6-11, 6-4 PAC)
whipped visiting Washington & Jefferson College on Friday, 17-3, using a
five-run fourth inning to break the game open and a seven-run eighth to close
the door.
Sophomore starter Greg Grupp (Harmony, PA/Slippery Rock) struck out 10 in eight
innings, earning the victory with a masterful pitching performance.
Grupp retired 16 of 20 Presidents in the middle innings and surrendered
only seven hits.
A trio of Wolverines had three hits, and sophomore 2B Jake Cuthbert (Belle
Vernon, PA/Belle Vernon) went 4-for-6 with three RBI and three runs scored.
Cuthbert is hitting .667 (14-for-21) in his last five games. Sparkplug freshman RF Michael McMillen (Pittsburgh, PA/North
Allegheny) made the most of his third start of the year, scoring three times and
driving in three on his first career home run for the last of his three hits.
Senior LF Mike Volchko (Akron, OH/Archbishop Hoban) belted his second
homer of the season, singled twice, and scored three runs.
Freshman DH Joel Diller (Hartville, OH/Marlington) had a 3-for-5 day before
giving way to junior Steve Navarro (Gilbertsville, PA/The Hill School) who
blasted a pinch hit three-run homer in the eighth inning for his third of the
year. A two-out error in the eighth frame led to Navarro and
McMillen’s shots. Junior C Matt
Skipper (Canton, OH/Canton South) doubled in the seventh to extend his hitting
streak to a dozen games.
Grove City will travel to Washington, PA to play a doubleheader against the
Presidents tomorrow afternoon in a key PAC showdown.
