WASHINGTON, PA, April 23, 2002 -- The Grove City College baseball team (7-12, 7-5 PAC) split a doubleheader with host Washington & Jefferson on Tuesday afternoon.  The Presidents won game one, 4-2, while the Wolverines bounced back with a 15-4 victory in the second game as both teams finished their conference schedules.

In the opener, sophomore starter Sean O’Donnell (Brackenridge, PA/St. Joseph) was victimized by Wolverine errors as every run was unearned.  He gave up three hits over six full innings, striking out eight without issuing a walk.  Grove City pulled to within two after scoring their runs in the top of the sixth, but weren’t able to close the gap.  Freshman DH Joel Diller (Hartville, PA/Marlington) was the only batter to collect a pair of hits.

Grove City got started early and didn’t stop in the second game as they got three in the first, seven in the third, and five in the seventh to cruise to the victory.  Senior 1B Drew Hoagland (Butler, PA/Knoch) clubbed his third homer of the year and scored three times.  A quintet of Grove City hurlers went to the mound to get work in before post-season play begins.

The Wolverine offensive attack now features a .500 hitter for the season.  Reigning PAC player of the week, sophomore 2B Jake Cuthbert (Belle Vernon, PA/Belle Vernon), went 5-for-8 on the afternoon to up his average to .508 (32-of-63) and picked up three RBI.  Joining Cuthbert were Diller, who was 4-for-6 with four runs scored, and freshman LF Mike McMillen (Pittsburgh, PA/North Allegheny), who knocked in four on two doubles.

The Presidents’ Athletic Conference baseball tournament will be held this weekend, with Grove City playing Waynesburg in the first round on Thursday.
