in tourney opener

GREENVILLE, PA, April 25, 2002 -- The
Grove City College baseball team (8-12), winless in its first three games
against Waynesburg College, beat the Yellow Jackets, 11-2, in the first round of
PAC tournament play at Thiel College on Thursday.
Freshman
Mike Gundy (Grand Rapids, MI/Grand Rapids Christian) gathered the complete game
victory as he struck out seven and walked one, and allowed only two unearned runs in
the seventh. The masterful
performance gives Gundy his third win of the year and lowers his season ERA to
2.96, which is among the PAC leaders.
The Wolverines got
the offense started in the third when Waynesburg walked the bases loaded, and
freshman DH Joel Diller (Hartville, OH/Marlington) singled to right field
scoring a pair of runners. Grove
City got three more in the fifth on back-to-back doubles by senior 1B Drew
Hoagland (Butler, PA/Knoch) and junior C Matt Skipper (Canton, OH/Canton South),
and a single by freshman LF Mike McMillen (Pittsburgh, PA/North Allegheny). The margin was pushed to 7-0 in the seventh as the Wolverines
used an error and three base hits to plate two men.
Grove City answered
Waynesburg’s rally in the bottom of the inning with two more runs in both the
eighth and ninth to close the game. The
Wolverines collected ten hits over the final three frames. Senior CF Eric Bell (Grove City, PA/Grove City) keyed the 19-hit outburst with a 4-for-5
day at the plate, scoring twice and driving in two. Hoagland also had two RBI and two runs on his three hits, and
McMillen joined him with three singles of his own. Senior RF Mike Volchko (Akron, OH/Archbishop Hoban) is
7-for-12 in the last week after a 2-for-4 performance today.
