Terriers

HIRAM, OH, May 1, 2002 --
Freshman Mike Gundy (Grand Rapids, MI/Grand Rapids Christian) improved his
season record to four wins against one loss as the Grove City College baseball
team (11-13) split a doubleheader at Hiram College (9-19) on Wednesday.
In the first game, Gundy retired the side in order in each of the first three
innings before giving up a bunt hit to start the fourth.
The Wolverines led 5-0 at that point, but a walk, three more singles, and an error allowed four runs and narrowed
the Grove City margin to 5-4.
The Wolverines scored one run in the second, and got two in the third on the
fourth homer of the year by senior 1B Drew Hoagland (Butler, PA/Knoch).
Senior CF Eric Bell (Grove City, PA/Grove City) plated two more in the
fourth with a single to left.
The Wolverines answered Hiram’s four-run fourth on a RBI single by freshman DH
Joel Diller (Hartville, OH/Marlington) in the sixth.
A solo shot in the bottom of the inning made it a 6-5 game.
Grove City once again responded with a single by sophomore 2B Jake
Cuthbert (Belle Vernon, PA/Belle Vernon) to drive two men in and secure the 8-5
victory.
The second game saw sophomore Matt Kearney (New Castle, PA/Neshannock) give up
one earned run in his complete game effort but lose 3-2.
A solo homer in the second put Hiram up 1-0 and was the only scoring
until the top of the fifth. With
two outs, Grove City finally got on the board on Cuthbert’s first home run of
the year. Diller followed with a
double and scored on Hoagland’s long single to deep left field.
However, Hiram used a leadoff error and a single to score a pair of runs
on groundballs to keep Grove City from getting to .500 on the year.
Bell was 3-for-5 in the opener, after which he was 12-of-21 (.571) over the five
previous games. Cuthbert, who is leading the PAC with a .469 batting average,
and Hoagland both went 4-for-7 with three RBI and one run.
Freshman 3B John Mycyk (Pittsburgh, PA/Shady Side Academy) had two hits
and scored twice in the game one victory.
Senior Justin Magee (Grove City, PA/Grove City) will step on Grove City’s home mound for the final time on
Saturday as the Wolverines look to even their season record at 13-13 against La
Roche. The first pitch will be at 1
PM in coordination with the activities for Parents’ Weekend.
