GROVE CITY, PA, May 4, 2002 -- The Grove City College baseball team (12-14) split a doubleheader with La Roche Saturday, losing the first game 7-6 before bouncing back with a 6-5 victory.

Senior Justin Magee (Grove City, PA/Grove City) spotted the Redhawks three runs in the first.  Freshman LF Mike McMillen (Pittsburgh, PA/North Allegheny) doubled to start the second, and sophomore RF Chris Hull (Chagrin Falls, OH/Chagrin Falls) followed with a two-base hit of his own.  In the third, freshman DH Joel Diller (Hartville, OH/Marlington) had a RBI double and freshman 3B John Mycyk (Pittsburgh, PA/Shady Side Academy) had a RBI single as three of the five runs were unearned.

Two of La Roche’s three runs in the fifth were unearned to allow the Redhawks to knot the score at 6 all.  A single with two outs in the top of the sixth was the difference since the Wolverines left the bases loaded in the seventh.  Grove City left 12 men on base in the game.

The second game saw Grove City come out flat as the Redhawks jumped out to a 4-1 edge after their half of the sixth.  Senior RF Mike Volchko (Akron, OH/Archbishop Hoban) doubled to left to plate the first run in the fifth.

The Wolverine bats woke up in a sixth inning that featured a rules controversy and three pitching changes.  Diller singled, and junior 1B Steve Navarro (Gilbertsville, PA/The Hill School) drove a double to deep right center to score him.  Mycyk’s infield single and the ensuing overthrow placed runners on second and third, and a walk loaded the bases.  A hit batter and a walk scored two runs, and senior CF Eric Bell (Grove City, PA/Grove City) broke the 4-4 deadlock with a sharply hit single to left field to plate a pair of runners.  Freshman reliever Luke Lester (Dover, OH/Dover) picked up the win in relief of Hull.

Diller was 4-for-7 on the afternoon and scored twice.  Hull reached base all four times (two hits and two walks) before going to the mound for game two.  Sophomore C Cliff Emery (Warren, OH/Champion) singled, scored twice, and was hit by a pitch to pick up a RBI in the second game.

Grove City travels to Slippery Rock Monday night to play a game at the Division II “Rock”’s new first year facility.
