Westminster rallies for 6-5 win over Grove City
by Greg Knowlden, sports information student assistant

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. -- The Grove City College baseball team (1-2) battled Presidents’ Athletic Conference rival Westminster in a non-league clash but came up short on the road, losing 6-5.

Westminster led 1-0 through four innings when the Wolverines scored four two-out runs in their half of the fifth frame.  Freshman center fielder Jason DeMeo (Washington, Pa./Trinity) and junior second baseman Jake Cuthbert (Belle Vernon, Pa./Belle Vernon) each contributed RBI singles while an error scored two more Grove City runs.

The Titans struck for three runs in the bottom of the sixth to knot the score at 4-4, as they finally got to Wolverine starter junior Greg Grupp (Harmony, Pa./Slippery Rock).  Grupp struck out four and allowed four hits in 5 2/3 innings before being replaced by junior Chris Hull (Chagrin Falls, Ohio/Chagrin Falls).

In the top of the seventh, Grove City reclaimed the lead when DeMeo doubled home freshman shortstop Mike Ritter (Moon, PA/Moon). Ritter started the inning with a two-base hit and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by sophomore left fielder Michael McMillen (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny).  However, two singles combined with a pair of errors and a sacrifice fly led to the game-tying and winning runs for Westminster in the bottom half of the inning.

DeMeo went 2-for-3, scored once, and drove in two runs to pace the Wolverine offense from the leadoff spot.  Ritter scored twice, and McMillen doubled and singled.

Grove City will open its home schedule next week with non-conference games on Tuesday and Wednesday.
