GROVE CITY, Pa. -- On a beautiful day weather-wise for the
Grove City College baseball team in their Presidents’ Athletic Conference
opener Friday afternoon, it turned out to be a beautiful day for visiting
Bethany College as the Bison defeated the Wolverines (2-4, 0-1 PAC) 12-5.
Bethany started quickly but only scored once in the first
inning as Grove City freshman center fielder Jason DeMeo (Washington,
Pa./Trinity) completed a double play by throwing out a man at the plate.
The score remained 1-0 until the fifth, when the Bison scored five
two-out runs. Four of the runs were unearned as the Wolverines committed a pair
of errors in the inning.
Grove City chipped away at the deficit in the sixth. After the Wolverines accepted three straight free passes, junior outfielder Chris Hull (Chagrin Falls, Ohio) hit a hard grounder to score a run, and then a DeMeo single to center plated two runners.
Bethany pushed its lead to 8-3 in the seventh by taking advantage of three more defensive miscues. Junior Greg Grupp (Harmony, Pa./Slippery Rock) allowed just two earned runs in seven innings of work and struck out six but took the loss.
An RBI single by freshman third baseman Mike MacDonald (Ellwood City, Pa./Ellwood City) and alert base-running by DeMeo after a double concluded the scoring for Grove City. Freshman reliever Eric Arnesen (Princeton, N.J./Timothy Christian) struck out four in his first career appearance.
The Wolverines will travel to Bethany Saturday for a doubleheader.
