Grove City ends PAC play with loss at Waynesburg
by Greg Knowlden, sports information student assistant

WAYNESBURG, Pa. – At Waynesburg College Tuesday, the host Yellow Jackets broke open a close game with 10 runs over the sixth and seventh innings and clinched the right to host the Presidents’ Athletic Conference tournament this weekend by defeating Grove City 14-4.  Grove City falls to 10-2, 6-9 in the PAC.

Grove City went ahead 1-0 on a solo home run by junior outfielder Greg Grupp (Harmony, Pa./Slippery Rock) in the third inning, but Waynesburg responded with two in the bottom half off Wolverine starter Matt Kearney (New Castle, Pa./Neshannock).

The Wolverines knotted the score on a two-out single by sophomore DH A.J. Stedford (Beaver, Pa./Beaver) that scored sophomore first baseman Joel Diller (Hartville, Ohio/Marlington) who doubled.

However, the Yellow Jacket bats came alive in the sixth and seventh frames to put the game out of reach.  The Wolverines got a solo blast by senior catcher Matt Skipper (Canton, Ohio/Canton South) in the eighth and a single by junior second baseman Jake Cuthbert (Belle Vernon, Pa./Belle Vernon) in the ninth that scored freshman center fielder Jason DeMeo (Washington, Pa./Trinity).

DeMeo, Cuthbert, Diller and Skipper each collected two hits as the Wolverines pounded out 12 hits on the afternoon.

Grove City will play in the consolation round of the PAC tournament this weekend as they travel to Washington and Jefferson on Friday for a single game, and then host the Presidents for a doubleheader Saturday afternoon.
