Wolverines win PAC opener

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. -- Sophomore center fielder Jerry Ott (Bridgeville, Pa./South Fayette) homered and drove in five runs while junior first baseman Joel Diller (Hartville, Ohio/Marlington) went 3-for-5 with a pair of doubles and three runs batted in as the Grove City College baseball team opened Presidents' Athletic Conference play with a 12-8 win at Westminster Monday afternoon.

Ott cracked a two-run single in Grove City's five-run third inning and then belted a three-run homer in the fourth. Diller, meanwhile, stroked run-scoring hits in the first, third and eighth innings.

As a team, Grove City pounded out 15 hits, including seven extra-base hits. Second baseman Jake Cuthbert (Belle Vernon, Pa./Belle Vernon), left fielder Michael McMillen (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny), catcher A.J. Stedford (Beaver, Pa./Beaver) and right fielder Greg Hrebinko (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mount Lebanon) all doubled for the Wolverines (4-9, 1-0 PAC).

Cuthbert and McMillen each scored three runs while Stedford knocked in a pair of runs.

Grove City jumped out to a 9-2 lead but Westminster eventually cut the lead to 10-8 in the bottom of the seventh. However, Grove City doubled its lead in the eighth as Stedford and Diller both had run-scoring doubles.

Third baseman Jonathan Mycyk (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shady Side Academy) went 2-for-5 and scored once.

Reliever Luke Lester (Dover, Ohio/Dover) earned the victory in relief, pitching 1 2/3 innings. He allowed one earned run and three hits. Sophomore Erik Arnesen (Princeton, N.J./Timothy Christian) picked up the save by pitching the final three innings. The burly right-hander fanned five and allowed one run.

Starter Chris Hull (Chagrin Falls, Ohio/Chagrin Falls) allowed five earned runs in 4 1/3 innings.

Grove City will host Westminster Tuesday in a doubleheader, starting at 7 p.m.
