Grove City splits doubleheader

GREENVILLE, Pa. -- The Grove City College baseball team split a Presidents' Athletic Conference doubleheader at Thiel Tuesday, winning the first game 10-3 but falling in the nightcap, 9-0, at Packard Park.

Senior Sean O'Donnell (Brackenridge, Pa./St. Joseph) hurled a complete game in the opener for Grove City (5-12, 2-3 PAC), allowing no earned runs in seven innings. Offensively, Grove City collected a season-high 18 hits, including seven extra-base hits.

Senior DH Greg Grupp (Harmony, Pa./Slippery Rock) homered, doubled and singled while sophomore center fielder Jerry Ott (Bridgeville, Pa./South Fayette) homered and singled. Sophomore shortstop Mike Ritter (Moon Township, Pa./Moon) doubled, singled and drove in three runs while juniors A.J. Stedford (Beaver, Pa./Beaver) and Jonathan Mycyk (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shady Side Academy) also doubled.

Senior second baseman Jake Cuthbert (Belle Vernon, Pa./Belle Vernon) went 3-for-3 and also walked while junior Michael McMillen (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) and sophomore Greg Hrebinko (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mount Lebanon) each added two hits.

Grupp's two-run homer in the bottom of the first helped the Wolverines grab a 3-0 lead. Grove City doubled the lead in the third as Ritter lashed a two-run double and then scored on a Cuthbert single. Ott's leadoff homer in the fourth extended Grove City's lead to 7-0.

After Thiel slashed the lead to 7-3 in the top of the fifth, Grove City rebounded with a three-run sixth. Mycyk cracked a two-run double and then came home on Ritter's second double of the game.

O'Donnell struck out five and walked just two batters.

In the second game, Thiel held Grove City to just three singles. The Tomcats (9-10, 2-2 PAC) scored in each of the first four innings, knocking starting pitcher Matt Kearney (New Castle, Pa./Neshannock) from the game in the fourth. Kearney took the loss, allowing eight earned runs in 3 2/3 innings.

Luke Lester (Dover, Ohio/Dover), John Jacobs (McDonald, Pa./West Allegheny) and Eric Hull (Chagrin Falls, Ohio/Chagrin Falls) all pitched in relief.

The game was originally scheduled for Grove City but was switched to Thiel late Tuesday morning due to field conditions. Grove City will visit Thiel Wednesday at 3 p.m. for a single nine-inning game.
