Wolverines wallop Thiel, 16-1

GREENVILLE, Pa. -- Seven Grove City players had multi-hit efforts Wednesday afternoon as the Wolverines rolled past host Thiel, 16-1, in Presidents' Athletic Conference baseball action at Packard Park.

The Wolverines (6-12, 3-3 PAC) pounded out a season-high 20 hits while on the mound, junior Mike Gundy (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) fired eight shutout innings. Gundy (1-1) struck out four batters and walked just two in earning his first victory of the year. He lowered his ERA to 1.17 with his effort.

Grove City broke the game open with a four-run sixth inning. The Wolverines added four more runs in the top of the eighth, then scored a half-dozen runs in the ninth.

Senior DH Greg Grupp (Harmony, Pa./Slippery Rock) helped lead the Grove City offense with a double, three singles and three runs batted in, raising his batting average to .424. Senior Jake Cuthbert (Belle Vernon, Pa./Belle Vernon) and sophomore Jerry Ott (Bridgeville, Pa./South Fayette) both went 3-for-7. Cuthbert drove in three runs while Ott scored twice. 

Sophomore right fielder Greg Hrebinko doubled, singled and knocked in a pair of runs while junior left fielder Michael McMillen (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mount Lebanon), junior catcher A.J. Stedford (Beaver, Pa./Beaver) and sophomore shortstop Mike Ritter (Moon, Pa./Moon) each stroked two hits. Juniors Joel Diller (Hartville, Ohio/Marlington) and Jonathan Mycyk (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shady Side Academy) both scored three times.

With the win, Grove City clinched the season series with Thiel, taking two of the three meetings. Grove City will host Hilbert in a non-conference doubleheader Thursday afternoon at 1 p.m.
