La Roche nips Grove City, 6-5

PITTSBURGH -- Host La Roche slipped past Grove City, 6-5, in non-conference collegiate baseball action Tuesday afternoon at John Arnold Field, sending Grove City's overall record to 9-16 on the 2004 season.

Grove City rallied to tie the game 5-5 with a pair of runs in the top of the ninth before La Roche shortstop Lucas McCoy drove in Kevin Dick with a two-out double in the bottom of the ninth.

Junior Luke Lester (Dover, Ohio/Dover) took the loss in relief of senior starter Matt Kearney (New Castle, Pa./Neshannock). Lester pitched three innings and allowed one run. Kearney struck out four in 5 2/3 innings.

The Wolverines took a 2-0 lead in the second as junior third baseman Jonathan Mycyk (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shady Side Academy) and sophomore shortstop Mike Ritter (Moon, Pa./Moon) cracked back-to-back doubles. Mycyk's double scored senior DH Greg Grupp (Harmony, Pa./Slippery Rock) while Ritter drove in Mycyk. In the third, Grupp singled home sophomore Jerry Ott (Bridgeville, Pa./South Fayette), boosting the lead to 3-0.

La Roche took a 5-3 lead into the ninth but Grove City rallied to tie the game. Ritter scored on an infield hit by junior Michael McMillen (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) while Ott earned a bases-loaded walk.  Ritter finished 2-for-4 while sophomore Greg Hrebinko (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mount Lebanon) doubled. 

Grove City visits Presidents' Athletic Conference foe Bethany Friday afternoon at 3 p.m.
