Wolverines slip past Pitt-Bradford, 3-2

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- Six Grove City pitchers combined to hold visiting Pitt-Bradford to just seven hits Monday as the Wolverines slipped past Pitt-Bradford, 3-2, in non-conference baseball action at College Field.

Offensively, juniors Michael McMillen (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) and Joel Diller (Hartville, Ohio/Marlington) each belted solo homers to pace the Wolverines (12-17). McMillen's homer in the fifth put Grove City up 2-1 while Diller's blast gave the Wolverines a necessary insurance run in the bottom of the eighth.

Sophomore Mike Kennedy (Chagrin Falls, Ohio/Chagrin Falls) earned the win in relief of senior starter Chris Hull (Chagrin Falls, Ohio/Chagrin Falls). Kennedy pitched 1 1/3 perfect innings over the fifth and six innings to receive his first career win.

Senior John Jacobs (McDonald, Pa./West Allegheny) retired Pitt-Bradford in the ninth, recording his first career save. Hull allowed just one hit in his three scoreless innings. In the fourth, he yielded to his younger brother, freshman Eric Hull (Chagrin Falls, Ohio/Chagrin Falls). Hull allowed one run and struck out two batters in the fourth.

Freshman left-hander Jarrett Wiggers (Panama, N.Y./Panama Central) followed Kennedy in the sixth and got the final two outs of the inning. Junior Mike Gundy (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) pitched two hitless innings before Jacobs entered the game in the ninth.

Grove City took a 1-0 lead in the second as sophomore shortstop Mike MacDonald (Ellwood City, Pa./Ellwood City) singled to right field, scoring junior third baseman Jonathan Mycyk (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shady Side Academy). Eight different Grove City players had a hit but no Wolverine had a multi-hit game.

Grove City visits Division II Slippery Rock Tuesday night for a 7:30 p.m. game. The Wolverines will open the 2004 Presidents' Athletic Conference Tournament Thursday afternoon at 3 p.m. against Washington and Jefferson at Bethany College.
