Behrend tops Grove City

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College baseball team dropped a rain-shortened 10-5 decision to visiting Penn State Behrend Wednesday afternoon at College Field in non-conference action.

Rain and lightning forced the game to be called with one out in the top of the ninth inning. Earlier, weather had delayed the game 38 minutes in the bottom of the second inning.

Grove City fell behind 6-2 in the second but a third-inning solo homer by freshman DH Michael Busin (New Castle, Pa./Neshannock) trimmed the lead to 6-3.

Grove City (4-18) then pulled to within 8-5 in the bottom of the sixth as junior shortstop Mike Ritter (Moon Township, Pa./Moon) belted a two-run single that scored senior third baseman Jonathan Mycyk (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shady Side) and senior left fielder Michael McMillen (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny).

Mycyk doubled while freshman right fielder Ryan Jones (New Castle, Pa./Neshannock) went 2-for-2. Busin and Ritter both had two hits.

Senior Mike Gundy (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) took the loss, allowing six earned runs in 1 1/3 innings. Junior Mike Kennedy (Chagrin Falls, Ohio/Chagrin Falls) pitched 2/3 of a scoreless inning in relief before the rain delay.

Sophomore lefty Jarrett Wiggers (Panama, N.Y./Panama Central) fired four innings and allowed two runs. Frosh Chris Bowser (Stow, Ohio/Stow) pitched a scoreless eighth inning while sophomore Justin Miller (Harrisburg, Pa./Susquehanna Township) got one out in the ninth before the game was called.

The Wolverines will host Thiel Friday afternoon at 3 p.m. in a single 9-inning Presidents' Athletic Conference game.
