Wolverines split with Oberlin

STRUTHERS, Ohio -- The Grove City College baseball team split a non-conference doubleheader with Oberlin Thursday night at Bob Cene Park in Struthers, Ohio. Oberlin pulled out an 8-4 win in the opener but the Wolverines (7-20) stormed back for a 14-0 win in the nightcap.

Freshman right-hander Chris Bowser (Stow, Ohio/Stow) earned his first collegiate victory in the nightcap, hurling six shutout innings. Bowser allowed just three hits and struck out four.

Senior third baseman Jonathan Mycyk (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shady Side Academy) helped lead Grove City's 14-hit attack in Game Two with a triple, double, two singles and four runs scored. Freshman second baseman Jamie Skyrm (Elkhart, Ind./Elkhart Baptist) went 2-for-2 and drove in four runs while freshman right fielder Pat Messner (McDonald, Pa./West Allegheny) doubled, singled and drove in three runs.

Senior catcher A.J. Stedford (Beaver, Pa./Beaver) belted a pair of hits and scored three times while freshman DH Bryan Pierrot (Wadsworth, Ohio/Wadsworth) scored twice. Senior first baseman Joel Diller (Hartville, Ohio/Marlington) tripled and scored while junior center fielder Jerry Ott (Bridgeville, Pa./South Fayette) doubled and scored.

The Wolverines broke the game open with a nine-run sixth inning. Grove City sent 14 batters to the plate during the outburst. Sophomore Neil Hoagland (Saxonburg, Pa./Knoch) pitched a scoreless seventh to complete the shutout, Grove City's first of the season.

In the opener, Grove City scored single runs in each of the first two innings before Oberlin rallied. Diller singled in Pierrot in the bottom of the first while Ott scored on Mycyk's second-inning sacrifice fly. Oberlin extended its lead to 5-2 but Grove City trimmed it to 5-4 in the bottom of the sixth. Ott scored on a wild pitch while Pierrot was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, scoring Stedford.

The Wolverines left the bases loaded in the sixth, though, and Oberlin sealed the win with a three-run seventh. Ott tripled and singled while Diller added two hits.

Sophomore left-hander Jarrett Wiggers (Panama, N.Y./Panama Central) took the loss, allowing five earned runs in three-plus innings. Sophomore reliever Dan Aloisio (Chicago, Ill./Wheaton Academy) allowed three runs in four innings of relief.

The Wolverines visit Waynesburg Friday afternoon in a single 9-inning Presidents' Athletic Conference game.
