Wolverines top Waynesburg
WAYNESBURG, Pa. -- The Grove City College baseball team remained alive for a potential Presidents' Athletic Conference Championship Tournament berth with an 11-7 win at Waynesburg Friday afternoon.
The Wolverines (8-20, 4-9 PAC) can earn the fourth and final spot in the PAC Tournament May 12-14 by sweeping Waynesburg (11-19-1, 5-8 PAC) Saturday. Grove City would also need Thiel (5-8 PAC) to lose one of two games at Washington and Jefferson Saturday.
Friday, Grove City rallied from an early deficit to capture its third PAC win in four games. Grove City tied the game at 2-2 with a pair of fourth-inning runs, then broke the game open with a five-run sixth inning. In the fourth, the Wolverines did not register a hit but took advantage of five walks and a wild pitch.
Consecutive doubles by freshmen Michael Busin (New Castle, Pa./Neshannock) and Pat Messner (McDonald, Pa./West Allegheny) at the start of the sixth inning put Grove City ahead for good. Junior shortstop Mike Ritter (Moon Township, Pa./Moon) cracked a two-run single, then scored on a double from junior center fielder Jerry Ott (Bridgeville, Pa./South Fayette). Ott scored Grove City's seventh run after a double by senior third baseman Jonathan Mycyk (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shady Side Academy).
Senior left fielder Michael McMillen (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) blasted a solo homer in the seventh, extending the lead to 8-2. Waynesburg pulled to within 8-7 in the bottom of the seventh but the Wolverines sealed the win with a three-run ninth. Senior A.J. Stedford's (Beaver, Pa./Beaver) run-scoring double highlighted the outburst.
Junior right-hander Ryan Carr (New Castle, Pa./Mohawk) earned the victory, pitching 6 2/3 innings. Carr registered seven strikeouts. Sophomore closer Justin Miller (Harrisburg, Pa./Susquehanna Township) earned his fourth save of the season after pitching 1 1/3 scoreless innings. That sets a new single-season College record. Miller's four saves also set a new career record at Grove City.
Busin doubled twice and scored two runs for Grove City while Ritter and McMillen both scored twice. The Wolverines also worked Waynesburg pitching for 13 walks. Grove City did leave 14 runners on base.
The Wolverines will host Waynesburg in a PAC doubleheader Saturday at 1 p.m.
