Grove City tops Hiram for 5th straight win

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College baseball team improved to 9-2 Tuesday afternoon with a 10-6 home win over visiting Hiram in a non-conference game at College Field. It is Grove City's fifth straight victory overall.

Grove City trailed 5-4 entering the bottom of the fifth but took control of the game with two runs in the fifth and then three more runs in the seventh.

Freshman reliever Matt Tindall (Copley, Ohio/Copley) earned the victory, pitching 3 1/3 innings. He allowed two earned runs and improved to 2-1 on the season. Junior Justin Miller (Harrisburg, Pa./Susquehanna Township) retired the final eight batters of the game for his second save of the year.

Freshman starter Zach Hillegas (Bridgeport, W. Va./Bridgeport) started and pitched the first three innings. Hillegas allowed two earned runs but did not allow a hit. He walked five and struck out three in that span.

Sophomore third baseman Bryan Pierrot (Wadsworth, Ohio/Wadsworth) led Grove City's 14-hit attack with a double, two singles and three runs batted in. His two-run double in the seventh gave the Wolverines a 9-5 lead. He scored Grove City's 10th run on a single from senior shortstop Mike Ritter (Moon Township, Pa./Moon). Ritter went 3-for-5 in the victory.

Junior outfielder Chris Schwamberger (Mansfield, Ohio/Madison) sparked Grove City's four-run second inning with a two-run triple. Schwamberger also singled in the win.

Sophomore catcher Mike Hess (Sewickley, Pa./Avonworth) and freshman first baseman Brad Stombaugh (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mount Lebanon) both collected a pair of hits. Stombaugh's two-run single in the fifth gave Grove City the lead for good. Freshman Seth Thompson (Canton, Ohio/GlenOak) ignited the fifth-inning rally with a pinch-hit double.

The Wolverines have now matched their win total from 2005. Grove City will visit Presidents' Athletic Conference rival Bethany Wednesday afternoon for a single 9-inning game at 3 p.m.
