Grove City tops Thiel, 3-1

GREENVILLE, Pa. -- The Grove City College baseball team earned a 3-1 victory over Mercer County rival Thiel Friday afternoon in a Presidents' Athletic Conference clash at Packard Park. The Wolverines are now 10-3 overall and 3-1 in the PAC.

Senior pitcher Erik Arnesen (Princeton, N.J./Timothy Christian) took a shutout into the ninth inning and improved to 3-0 overall on the season. Arnesen allowed just four hits and one earned run in eight innings. He struck out eight Thiel batters. Junior Justin Miller (Harrisburg, Pa./Susquehanna Township) recorded the final three outs to earn his third save of the season. Miller now has eight career saves, extending his own College record.

Grove City took a 2-0 lead in the top of the second as sophomore center fielder John Coyne (Solon, Ohio/Solon) doubled home freshman second baseman Ben Wilson (Mechanicsville, Va./Ben Davis). Coyne then scored on a single by sophomore third baseman Bryan Pierrot (Wadsworth, Ohio/Wadsworth).

Grove City added its third run in the third as junior first baseman Dan Bartkowiak (Fredonia, N.Y./Fredonia) singled home sophomore DH Mike Hess (Sewickley, Pa./Avonworth).

Junior left fielder Chris Schwamberger doubled and singled for the Wolverines, who have already surpassed their 2005 win total. The 10 wins are a Grove City record for March, also.

Grove City will host Thiel in a PAC doubleheader Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m.
