Wolverines fall at Westminster, 10-7

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. -- The Grove City College baseball team dropped a 10-7 decision at Presidents' Athletic Conference rival Westminster Friday afternoon in the first game of the teams' three-game weekend series.

Grove City (21-10, 9-7 PAC) led 7-6 entering the bottom of the eighth but Westminster (16-16, 4-9 PAC) rallied for four runs against Wolverine reliever Mike Kennedy (Chagrin Falls, Ohio/Chagrin Falls). Earlier, the Wolverines had charged back from a 4-0 deficit.

Grove City cut Westminster's lead to 4-3 in the fourth. Freshman second baseman Ben Wilson (Mechanicsville, Va./Lee-Davis) ignited the inning with a run-scoring single while junior left fielder Chris Schwamberger (Mansfield, Ohio/Madison) followed later with a two-run single.

The Wolverines then took the lead in the fifth with a four-run outburst that featured just one hit -- an RBI single by sophomore catcher Ray Mertz (Glenshaw, Pa./Shaler). Mertz finished the day 3-for-5 with two runs scored while Schwamberger finished with three runs batted in. Junior first baseman Dan Bartkowiak (Fredonia, N.Y./Fredonia) added a double and two runs scored.

Kennedy took the defeat, allowing four runs in 1 2/3 innings. Senior Erik Arnesen (Princeton, N.J./Timothy Christian) started for Grove City, allowing four earned runs in 6 1/3 innings.

Grove City will host Westminster Saturday in a PAC doubleheader, starting at 1 p.m.
