Wolverines top Bethany, 15-4

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- Host Grove City erased an early 4-1 deficit by scoring 14 unanswered runs Friday afternoon in earning a 15-4 win over visiting Bethany in Presidents' Athletic Conference baseball action at College Field. Grove City is now 8-1 overall and 1-0 in the PAC.

Grove City hammered out 19 hits, including a dozen during the middle three innings of the game. The Wolverines took the lead for good with a six-run fourth inning that featured two-run doubles from senior right fielder Chris Schwamberger (Mansfield, Ohio/Madison) and junior second baseman Bryan Pierrot (Wadsworth, Ohio/Wadsworth). Junior DH Pat Messner (McDonald, Pa./West Allegheny) also cracked a run-scoring double while sophomore first baseman Brad Stombaugh (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mount Lebanon) helped ignite the rally with an RBI single.

The Wolverines added a run in the fifth, three in the sixth and four more runs in the bottom of the seventh. Junior Jon Coyne (Solon, Ohio/Solon) extended Grove City's lead to 8-4 in the fifth with a sacrifice fly. Junior center fielder Brian Moran (Columbia, Md./Chapelgate) and sophomore third baseman Cody Koontz (Moundsville, W. Va./John Marshall) both had run-scoring singles in the sixth. Schwamberger's steal of home on the front end of a double steal highlighted the Wolverines' seventh-inning outburst.

Stombaugh went 3 for 4 while Schwamberger doubled twice. Moran went 3-for-6 with a double and three runs batted in. Moran also stole a pair of bases. Koontz added a pair of singles and two runs scored.

Senior pitcher Eric Hull (Chagrin Falls, Ohio/Chagrin Falls) earned the victory by pitching 5 1/3 innings of scoreless relief. Hull allowed just one infield single and no Bethany runner reached scoring position. Freshman Aaron Cosma (Lisbon, Ohio/Lisbon) pitched a perfect ninth inning of relief. Freshman Michael Herringshaw (Chardon, Ohio/Notre Dame Cathedral Latin) started and allowed four runs in 2 2/3 innings.
