Waynesburg tops Grove City, 7-4

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College baseball team fell to 10-4 overall and 2-2 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference Wednesday afternoon with a 7-4 loss at PAC rival Waynesburg.

Grove City trailed 4-0 after two innings but quickly cut the lead in half in the top of the third. Following back-to-back singles from junior center fielder Brian Moran (Columbia, Md./Chapelgate) and junior left fielder Pat Messner (McDonald, Pa./West Allegheny), junior catcher Ray Mertz (Glenshaw, Pa./Shaler) cracked a two-run double.

However, Waynesburg (9-9, 4-3 PAC) added single runs in the third, fifth and sixth innings in taking a 7-2 lead.

Grove City cut the lead to 7-3 in the eighth as sophomore shortstop Ben Wilson (Mechanicsville, Va./Lee-Davis) doubled and scored on a groundout by sophomore DH Brad Stombaugh (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mount Lebanon). Mertz then smacked a solo homer in the ninth. Mertz finished the day 3 for 5. Wilson also singled while sophomore third baseman Cody Koontz (Moundsville, W. Va./John Marshall) singled twice.

Freshman pitcher Jeff Baluch (Perryopolis, Pa./Geibel) took the defeat for Grove City. Baluch allowed seven runs and seven hits in 5 2/3 innings. Four of the runs were unearned, however, as Grove City committed five errors defensively. Senior reliever Eric Hull (Chagrin Falls, Ohio/Chagrin Falls) pitched 2 1/3 scoreless innings out of the bullpen.

Grove City will host Waynesburg Thursday in a PAC doubleheader at 1 p.m.
